The trapunto base for my Elizabethan Tomb Effigy doll (about 13" tall) consists of two layers of fabric with quilting type stuffing layered between the them. An outline stitch defines the separate parts which were then pierced from behind and stuffed with regular polyfill doll stuffing and the small holes used for the stuffing sewn back up. A third layer of black fabric makes up the back of the doll (which was intended to be used in a tableau setting). The completed trapunto was sized with half and half white carpenter's glue and water. The completed Elizabethan Tomb Effigy doll has been painted in acrylics, layered on each other, embellished slightly with beading; pearls around the face (pearls were a big item in Elizabethan wear) and gold beads making up the rosary in her hands. My full intent was to have the eyes closed in the traditional fashion but she insisted on having her eyes open. Instead of the tableau which I had intended she prefers to stand (she is weighted to stand) in front of my better hardcover books The 'feel' of the doll is very like oilcloth and very strong. I did not put on the black backing until she was fully painted and there was some tugging involved to turn the doll for regular stuffing with no ill effect to the artwork.
